Allatoona Aquatics Base News
(April, 2002)

New Crew Quarters Base
In one of the largest expansions in the 50 year history of Camp Allatoona, a separate area has been developed for crews training for both the Northern Tier Canoe Base and The Florida Sea Base High Adventure programs.

The Atlanta Area Council offers the only advance crew training for both high adventure activities.  The programs have been developed in conjunction with Sea Base and the Canoe Base and provide the hands-on training necessary for a successful high adventure trip.

The new Crew Quarters is located on the site originally developed as "Linger Point," which overlooks the lake toward Victoria Harbor.  The site was originally developed with the help of Troop 465.  Just recently the site has been upgraded by the Order of the Arrow and also Venture Crew service projects.

"Crew Quarters have been one of major components missing from the preparation for our high adventure training," said Bill Bennett, who heads the all-volunteer Aquatics Base programs.  "Now crews can come to the Allatoona Aquatics Base, spend Friday night in our tent city, and be ready to go first thing the next morning," added Bennett.

The Crew Quarters, which is just a short walk from the main parking area, has two sections.  Site A "Louis & Clark Site" has 14 two-person tents with cots.  Site B "Conch City" has 6 two-person tents with cots.  Each site is equipped with propane stoves, tarps and picnic tables.

Sea Base Training
The Sea Base preparation training includes sailing boats for crews of up to eight participants.  Crews will learn on 23-foot to 26-foot sail boats.  The training includes the basic techniques of sailing, knots to anchors and even star study.

Northern Tier Training
The Northern Tier preparation training includes backpacking, portage, cooking and a canoe trek and camp.  Crews will paddle down the Little River and back to Allatoona Aquatics Base.  Basic canoe and paddling techniques will also be part of each crew’s training.
